I fucking hate pears. They're just fake apples.
Like, the taste is ok, but you bite into one, expecting the texture and softness of an apple, but instead you get a fucking hard, grainy, unsettling wierd-ass thing in your mouth. It's horrible.
The only thing they're good for is being baked into something to taste/feel more like apples.
The only valid pear is an apple.
#i fucking hate it so much#we have a pear tree#and now like half our fridge is pears#i fucking hate pears#my mom loves them but she cant eat them that fast#AND she decided to go to EUROPE#to visit her MOTHER#so theres no one to manage the amount of pears#there are no natural predators#the pears are growing wild and harming the local ecosystem#its an epidemic#action must be taken but the only action i can think of baking them to be like applea#but theyre not apples#theyre pears#and i fucking hate pears

Late night wishful thinking but like
I think planting funky things around retention ponds should be more normalized!!
Like okay I get it retention ponds are meant to hold the runoff water from parking lots and drive throughs and the like so they aren’t exactly the cleanest water around. But like!!! Maybe this is different in other areas, but the only plants I ever see grow around retention ponds are cattails!! Which, like, are fine and great and dandy lets go cattails, but like
Where’s the whimsy?? Where are the flowers?? If I’ve got to see retention ponds whenever I go to a store or drive down the highway or pick up food for my mom, at least bring in some flowers!!
And it’ll benefit so much! A wider variety of plants can make it a more welcoming home to wildlife! Maybe the plants will filter some of the runoff stuff and the water can then be nicer for even more wildlife! Maybe the flowers can be a nice food source for butterflies and bees on their journeys and day trips!! And humans like seeing things be pretty!
Maybe its easier said than done! Maybe most places already do this and its just my city or state that doesn’t really I’d be willing to believe that! But lets get some color in these goddamn retention ponds!!
Swamp milkweed! Aquatic milkweed! Pickerelweed! Water lilies! Irises! Cardinalflower! Fuck it, put some goddamn duckweed in there!! Get some color in those things or so help me!!
#out of queue#ani rambles#solarpunk#gardening#pond gardening#‘ani why not just guerrilla garden in the retention ponds’ im not THAT good at starting plants#and ive yet to have success guerrilla gardening as is!!!#i think there should be like a volunteer group that just rocks up like ‘hey we’ll make your retention pond bomb as fuck and still functional#FOR FREE. and we can start next saturday!!!#also SOMEONE MANAGE THE INVASIVE PLANTS AROUND RETENTION PONDS!!!!#i saw a pond that I was 60% positive was surrounded by callery pear trees#i couldnt be 100% sure because I was actively driving but yknow!!!#‘oh all the water drains to here lets put a pond there to hold the draining water’ THATS HABITAT NOW#CARE FOR THE HABITAT YOUVE CREATED#YES I KNOW THIS IS A POND IN A WALMART PARKING LOT I DONT CARE. WHATS GOING ON IN THERE. BEAUTIFY IT#‘ani why dont you start the group’ idk much about growing aquatic/wetland plants#maybe ill bring it up if i ever go to a florida native plant society meeting who knows#its 1:30 am gnight

Corinne and I want to get into fragrances so we got some sample ones and I really wanted to try secretions magnifiques from etat libre d'orange (the one that people say smells like cum) so we got that as one. Corinne tried it on and so far has described it as smelling like "a baby born in a tidepool," "mermaid breastmilk," "feminine but only if all the women you know are evil," and "sucking off Jeremy fragrance but he just got out of the ocean"
#its honestly not as gross and unpleasant as people make it out to be. theres a certain je ne sais quoi#to me its like a callery pear tree drenched in sea water#from the same perfumer we also got jasmin et cigarette#which smells like the dressing room of a heavily perfumed actress in an old theater where you used to be able to smoke indoors#super intense jasmine and vaguely smoky. not tobacco but actual cigarette smoke#we have a bunch more but we're gonna try them at a later date

Acorn Anne visits some Mulberry trees that are in need of healing. please send a small offering of dry, warm air through your closest fairy ring and Acorn Anne will direct it to the leaves of both trees. thank you for your cooperation 🫡
#ok i learned the fungus on my trees is not life threatening and is worse in wet summers#apparently stronger and healthier trees are more resistant to it too#which if the rest of the neighborhood is anything to go by i think my trees are a bit healthier#that is good to see#they need a good trim though#anyway send dry air it might rain this week which i do love bc we always need rain in texas#but if you send the dry air in the fairy ring acorn anne can reserve it for next summer and maybe they can be healthier then#since its almost autumn rn anyway#actually send me some spoons through the ring too bc i need to trim their branches and rake the fungus leaves up#i dont plan on raking the normal autumn leaves but apparently keeping the fungus leaves off the ground can help#thank you in advance for any contributions you make ok love you byeeee#my clown#acorn anne syrup#clownblr#clownin around#clown shenanigans#clown doll#porcelain clown doll#PS if you send dry air through the portals i will also have Acorn Anne send you back any mulberries we happen to get if any#i have NO clue if these trees will produce fruit lmao i have no experience with mulberry trees at all#even though apparently these are native to my area#seems like in the 60s they still planted native trees instead of *clenches fist* bradford pears#unreality

I'm gonna be so mad if something eats the fucking strawberry I'm waiting to ripen before I can get to it. They got the last one and it wasnt even fully ripe! You little fucker!! Theres a few flowers still blooming due to the hot weather continuing (god help us) which is funny and I do enjoy watching the strawberries grow from flower to berry but... I'd like the animals to stop eating them first :(
#marquilla#next summer ill have to put the pot up on the old play box instead of next to it. ill get a bigger pot for the blueberry 'tree' (not a bush#it's like a stick) and maybe transplant some into a hanging basket (the strawberries) bc that fucker is propagating in other areas#on the ground around it which is amusing bc i got that bulb? seed pod? for $0.50 at walmart two years ago baybeeee! got garlic too that#never grew 😥 i wanna grow black bulb garlic bc my grandpa had that and it smelt really interesting agdgdgdgd i never ate it but id try it#speaking of the backyarden i have SO many marigold seed pods already shdhdhdh im drying them out on the picnic table and putting them in a#jar i think i might put them in this big pear jar we had bc the lid was stabbed (dont ask) so slight ventilation while keeping critters out#in the garage ANYWAYS we have these BEAUTIFUL red and yellow ones that look painted and theyre so so lovely#and orange. few plain yellow. and red/orange ones but i clip the petals off the seed pods (space/easier to dry) so it's a mystery on which#will grow! but we sprinkle the seeds all over the side garden and by late summer they all bloom and i LOVE it 🥰🥰🥰#if anyone wants some mystery color marigold seed pods ill mail em to you sgdghdhd just throw a handful in a ziploc bag and an envelope

In my continuing adventures of Making Things I Could Buy my mother and I have 1.5 gallons of hard cider now fermenting!
We went to a fall festival yesterday and bought 2 gallons of fresh pressed, unpasteurized apple cider(the cloudy delicious kind not hard obviously) and then we dumped it in a sanitised bucket with yeast nutrient and pectic enzyme and we're letting the natural yeasts on the apple skins ferment it! It will either be the tastiest thing ever or very gross <3
Next weekend we're making mead with local honey but that will have packaged wine yeast in it
And I'm hoping to at some point convince my dad to make beer with non gluten grain so I can have beer
#currently we're debating whether we should buy a fruit press#there's a wild apple tree near us that has billions every fall#and we have two baby apple trees. four dwarf cherry trees. 4 grape vines. 2 blackberries. a raspberry. and a blackcurrant#so lots and lots of fruit to press#if we can figure out a place for a pear tree we'll get one too

Despite the tree being smack in the middle of campus, I think persimmons are one of my university's better-kept secrets because most people don't know what they are or how to eat them. Finding ripe ones was a pleasant surprise on the first day of classes.
#hylian rambles#college life#we have pear trees too and there are mever any ripe ones left#persimmons on the other hand are just so weird to pick and eat that people overlook them#for those unfamiliar: persimmons are ready to eat when they fall off the tree and have an almost jelly like texture#for most fruits that would be disgustinglg overripe but persimmons before that have this super astringent taste that is really unpalatable#to most people. my sibling likes underripe persimmons but they are WeirdTM#also fun fact some persimmon varieties are native to north america! not the kind you'll find in stores but some. I'm not sure if the store#variety need to be this ripe or not. the one time i saw them in a store (in italy) they were much firmer than i would normally eat

What is Samhain?
Samhain, celebrated from October 31st to November 1st in the Northern Hemisphere and from April 30th to May 1st in the Southern Hemisphere, is a sacred time when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest. During this festival, the boundaries between realms dissolve, allowing the unseen to come forward. It’s a time to honor our ancestors and offer them hospitality as we transition into the darker half of the year. While it marks the end of the old year, Samhain also heralds the beginning of a new one, reminding us that death is always followed by rebirth, making this festival a powerful moment of transformation.
It is pronounced "Sow-en," which means "summer's end" and aligns with Halloween in the Northern Hemisphere. Samhain marks the time when the Earth enters a period of rest, the days shorten, and winter begins its slow arrival. During this time, the air becomes crisper, the nights grow longer, and the warmth of summer fades, symbolizing the end of one cycle and the start of another.
Samhain holds deep significance as it is a time to remember and honor those we have lost. The thinning of the veil allows for a stronger connection with ancestors, spirits, and otherworldly beings. While it’s a time to venerate these spirits and fair folk, who are particularly active during this liminal period, it’s also essential to protect oneself from any harmful entities that may cross through.
A key aspect of Samhain is honoring and respecting the dead. One simple yet meaningful tradition is to set an extra place at the table for any spirit or ancestor, offering them a meal. Many witches also visit cemeteries to pay respects, not only to their own ancestors but also to those forgotten by time, ensuring no spirit is left without recognition.

Morrigan x Dagda and Samhain
According to legend, the Irish deities the Dagda and the Morrigan consummate their relationship today to ensure the fertility of land, people, and animals for the year to come. The Dagda, “the good god,” is the tribal father god; the Morrigan, “the phantom queen,” is often described as a “battle goddess,” although that only hints at her powers. She begins the Great Rite in the form of an old hag but is rejuvenated by the union, regaining her youth and beauty. On the eve of Samhain, the Dagda, god of strength and fertility, meets the Morrigan, goddess of war and fate, at the River Unius. As he prepares for battle against the Fomorians, ancient enemies of the Tuatha Dé Danann, he encounters the Morrigan bathing in the river. They make love, a symbolic act representing the union of the land (the Morrigan) with its protector (the Dagda). In return, the Morrigan promises to aid the Tuatha Dé Danann, using her powers of prophecy and battle to help them secure victory. Her role as a goddess of fate is essential, shaping the outcome of the war and the future of the land.

Tree stuff
Most trees should outlive you. If a landscaper tells you the lifespan of a tree is 10 years, they don't know what they're talking about.
Trees are free. Carefully comb over your yard for baby trees, especially in mid-spring!
Similarly, If you live near a gravel driveway or gravel parking lot, you can find baby tree sprouts that can be easily transplanted by gently removing the gravel bits from around the roots, wrapping the roots in wet paper towel, and transplanting to a large pot.
Do not pile up mulch around the base of a tree. You can mulch under the tree, but it should be a mostly flat layer, not a raised mound, and keep the mulch a few inches away from touching the trunk. Roots need some access to air or the tree will grow roots upward through the mulch, and the roots will slowly wrap around the trunk and strangle the tree to death. It's called root girdling and it is very sad.
Trees need friends!!! If possible, plant two or three trees instead of just one. Trees share nutrients through the mycorrhizal network and they protect each other from storm damage.
Always get a tree that is native to your area and suited to your local environment.
Growing an oak from an acorn is easy. Go to an area where there are oaks in the fall, and collect the acorns that have turned brown and whose hats have popped off. Get large pots at least 8 inches depth, and lay the acorns on their sides on top of the potting soil, then cover them with a layer of damp fallen leaves, and leave them outside all winter long. Just be sure to cover them with some wire mesh or something to protect them from squirrels
Please keep oaks and other large trees about 20 feet from any structure because they will grow huge. Websites will tell you to keep trees X distance away from "structures or other trees" but other trees can go as little as 6-10 feet apart whereas structures need to be like 15 feet away minimum, generally speaking
Prune the tree while it's dormant, NOT in the middle of summer!
If you happen to be from the Eastern United States, please consider getting an oak! They are keystone species and host plants for literally hundreds of insects. We have too many maples here too, so maybe consider a Sweetgum or Black Gum for pretty fall colors?
If you have a tree that's tied to a stake to keep it upright, get rid of that thing as soon as you can, particularly if there's zip ties holding it to the tree, because those can grow into the bark and kill the tree...
If your tree is dead, please consider cutting off the branches and leaving at least 6-10 feet or so of trunk standing. Dead tree snags like this are important nesting places for many birds and you might see a woodpecker
If you live in North America, whatever you do, do NOT get anything marketed as an "ornamental flowering pear tree." They're typically Pyrus calleryana, and they're virulently invasive
Bugs eating a few holes in the leaves of your tree? Good for them! (They aren't hurting the tree unless they're like, fully skeletonizing it, and they're just the caterpillars of butterflies and moths. Want Luna moths or Tiger Swallowtail butterflies? Let the caterpillars eat their dinner mmkay.)
Don't throw away the fallen leaves! Butterflies, moths, stick bugs, lightning bugs, ladybugs, and many other insects hibernate the winter in the fallen leaves. Use them as mulch for flower beds, compost them, or just leave them alone! You'll probably want to stop mowing after the leaves fall if you'd like to see bugs.
